Undoubtedly a sleeper of the vintage, and probably the finest 1997 cru bourgeois, Poujeaux's 1997 exhibits a dense purple color as well as a sweet nose of black fruits complemented by toasty oak and loamy soil scents. Textured, layered, and rich, with low acidity and an excellent ripe finish, it can be drunk now and over the next 10-15 years. Bravo!

One of the big-time sleepers of the vintage, the 1997 is one of the finest Poujeauxs I have ever tasted. It stands out in the vintage for its opulence, wonderfully sweet, ripe, jammy black currant and cherry fruit, in addition to copious quantities of glycerin, extract, fat, and lusciousness. Unctuously-textured, thick and juicy, with low acidity, exceptional purity, and gobs of fruit, this knock-out Poujeaux will be drinkable when released, yet age well for 12-15 years. Kudos to the Theil family.

Dark inky red. A lot of excess oak on the nose. Firm tannins: thick with a slightly coarse mouth-feel. Another 5-6 years should do the trick. Impressive weight and persistency. Good potential. Tasted March 1998.
