The 2018 Cap de Faug?res is composed of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon; harvest began on September 22. Deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with intense scents of preserved plums, kirsch, chocolate box and menthol with hints of woodsmoke and Indian spices. Full-bodied, rich and voluptuously fruited in the mouth, the palate has a velvety texture and plenty of red fruit sparks of freshness, finishing spicy. Fans of Ch?teau Faug?res and Peby-Faug?res, owned by perfume designer and owner of Lalique crystal, Silvio Denz, might be expecting an atomic bomb in a glass from the 2018s. But there was an obvious, concerted choice to pull back on the ripeness this year. Not to say that the wines are shrinking violets―hardly―but at 14.5% alcohol in a year that a lot of Right Bank properties are facing alcohol levels of 15% or more, this is certainly more restrained than usual. And it pays off. The wines maintain all the richness fans will expect with lovely vibrancy and freshness. Bravo!
